UNC-TV's Digital Channel Lineup Changes

In the wee hours of Thursday morning, September 25, engineers completed the necessary changes to allow UNC-TV to broadcast 24 hours a day as a high-definition digital channel. In order to make this possible, it was necessary to reduce the public television network's total number of over-the-air digital broadcast services to three. In addition to UNC-TV in HD, viewers are now also receiving UNC-KD, featuring fulltime children's programming, and UNC-NC, with programs for and about North Carolina. As a result, digital channels UNC-ED and UNC-HD are no longer available as over-the-air services, although they may remain available to Time Warner digital cable customers.

The changes in the over-the-air lineup of digital channels were necessary to make it possible to broadcast UNC-TV as a high-definition service. In addition, UNC-NC will now also be available as a 24-hour broadcast service, with no blackout between 8:00 and 11:00 p.m. (Previously, it was necessary to black out UNC-NC and UNC-ED in order to broadcast UNC-HD during that three-hour period.)

The network initiated these changes so that UNC-TV can be available to viewers as a 24/7 high definition service, which will be a major improvement in service to the people of North Carolina, especially following the federally-mandated shutoff of analog television service in February 2009.

UNC-TV is North Carolina's statewide public television network.
Comments:

UNC-TV's change, geared to city dwellers and cable tv paid subscribers, leaves us in the country out. After the change Thursday, I could not receive the presidential debate at 9 p.m. I cannot see a delayed broadcast of Lehrer's news hour on UNC-ED, or any of the educational programs I had started to enjoy.

The one broadcast I could rely on receiving, before getting a DTV converter box, was UNC TV on channel 4 in Chapel Hill. After the box, I was delighted to receive 5 UNC channels. Now I have fewer choice than before the box, without switching antennae to tune in, sometimes, a couple other commercial stations.

I am very disappointed in this decision to exclude those of us who aren't "on the grid." I thought UNC TV was concerned about public service. I don't think that any more.
